Pakistan, India Flood Leaves Health Risks in Its Wake

Pakistan, India Flood Leaves Health Risks in Its Wake

Recent flooding in the Himalayan region of Kashmir, divided between India and Pakistan, has left an "unprecedented catastrophe" in the region, local officials said Tuesday, as fears over health problems brought on by the onslaught of water take center stage.
With hundreds of thousands of individuals displaced, and at least 528 dead, "the chance of cholera, jaundice and leptospirosis spreading are high," said Dr. Swati Jha with the aid group Americares. "The most essential need right now is that of clean water."
Countless bloated livestock carcasses were floating across the waterlogged Kashmir region of India, The Associated Press reported Tuesday. Many residents, warned to avoid the floodwaters, were rationing water bottles brought every few days by aid workers, as people accused the government of having been slow to respond to the floods that hit the Himalayan region.
Most hospitals have been inundated, their diagnostic equipment, CT scanners, operation theaters and ventilators destroyed.
