Severe weather warning and flood alerts issued

GALES-PIC

Severe weather warnings were in place tonight as the Westcountry was hit with a battering by high winds and heavy rain.

Gales were sweeping across many parts of the region this evening – bringing strong winds and torrential rainfall.

The Exeter-based Met Office issued a yellow warning for rain to start at 5pm tonight and to continue until at least 9am Tuesday morning.

Police warned rush hour drivers to take extra case after localised flooding and surface spray made conditions treacherous.

Forecasters warned of particularly heavy downpours throughout the day on Tuesday which may not clear until later in the week.

Officials at the Environment Agency posted warnings of potential flooding for nine rivers in the region.

“The public should be aware of the risk of localised flooding, perhaps exacerbated by fallen leaves blocking drainage courses,” a Met Office spokesman added.
