Winter Storm Octavia: 10 Dead, Thousands Still Without Power, Some Schools and Businesses Reopen

Winter Storm Octavia has left more than a foot of snow in parts of the South, as well as an ice storm that caused major problems on roadways and hundreds of thousands to lose power.
Here are the latest impacts from the winter storm:
  • 10 deaths reported: 4 in Tennessee, 3 in Virginia, 1 in North Carolina, 1 in Indiana, and 1 in Kansas.
  • South Carolina: Many schools are closed or delayed Wednesday, WISTV.com reported. More than 23,000 remained without power Wednesday morning, Duke Energy said.
  • Georgia: Power companies say more than 70,000 customers in Georgia are still without electricity Wednesday morning, AP reported.
  • North Carolina: Officials warned drivers to be careful on roadways Wednesday, as the threat of black ice remains. Nearly 10,000 customers were without power Wednesday morning, according to Duke Energy.
  • Tennessee: Nearly 15,000 are without power. Authorities say all of the interstates around Middle Tennessee remain hazardous with reports of slow-moving traffic, stranded motorists and lanes closed in many locations. Wilson County Schools and Metro Nashville Schools announced there will be no classes the rest of the week.
