Hurricane Nate Hits North Carolina Apple Orchards

While Hurricane Nate was only classified as a category one, the severe weather can do quite a bit of damage.  For apple farmers in North Carolina, the fifty miles per hour wind is forcing them to take action.  For farmer Lola Coston, the rain poses a threat of saturating "the ground and weaken[ing] the root system of young trees. Additionally, heavy winds can knock apples off the tree- making them waste."

Luckily for them, many families have caught on to the warnings and are getting their apple picking done early.  This actually minimizes the waste from fallen apples and produces a lot of business for the farms.  Coston considers it an unusual type of "risk management" that is certainly working.  Hopefully, we will see little damage to a Fall favorite.
