Why Do Leaves Change Color?

With Fall just around the corner, many have been anticipating the yearly change of leaves.  It brings the perfect time for a nice hike or family picture.  But how do they get to be such beautiful shades of red, pink, orange, and yellow?  It's all in the sun!

Leaves use carbon dioxide and sunlight to create glucose.  In order to take in that sunlight, leaves are covered in chlorophyll.  Chlorophyll is a remarkably absorbent substance and helps the leaves to speed up the glucose process.   As the sun retreats to the Northern Hemisphere for the winter, leaves no longer have sunlight to help with that breathing.  The other colors hidden beneath the mighty green are now able to show themselves.  After helping the tree with its life process, the leaves are no longer necessary and drop; leaving us with a cold winter!
