New Fire Models Can Predict A Fire Behaves

According to an article found on sciencenews.org, "...scientists are developing more nuanced fire models with increasingly detailed satellite data and better understanding of how fires can create their own weather and their own flames" (Hamers). State and federal agencies typically manage wildfires using mathematical equations to determine how fires will spread. The new programs that are being created will take much longer to give results (about hours or days), so these new models will not replace the ones that are currently in place, but they will help scientists better predict in the future exactly how fires operate.
Wildfires are expected to cause as much damage, if not more, in 2018 than they did in 2017. Climate change is likely to increase the problem as years go on, and wildfires will most likely become even stronger. A team of scientists have been using a model called CAWFE in order to determine what drives wildfires. Continuing to use these models could help prevent the spread of future wildfires.
