Brave Souls

The Midland boys golf team braved the weather on Monday and were rewarded with a first-place finish at the Saginaw Valley League's first jamboree of the spring season.
Midland scored a 316 as a team at the Flint Elks Golf Club, edging out Flint Powers Catholic (317) and Lapeer (326). Midland sophomore Top Kamnark was the medalist with a even-par 72. Teammate Drew Gandy, a freshmen, scored an 80, whileLogan Lincoln scored an 81 and Jordan Miller scored an 83.
"We always give the same speech during our first jamboree," said coach Jeff Babin. "We can't win the Valley in the first one, but we can't lose it. It is more of a marathon than a sprint, but we put ourselves in a good position, so I am happy about that."
Babin spoke highly of Kamnark's performance so far this season.
"He was our leader on and off last year, and he is really one of the best players in the Valley," he said. "He is pretty solid and a fun kid to have on the team. He is positive, hard-working and encourages the other kids."
Babin said his youthful team has the right attitude to succeed this season.
"It doesn't happen every year, but right now we are blessed with talent, but even better, with kids that are great together and work hard," he said. "They are competitive, and coaches love to coach teams like them.
"Even if they didn't have the talent they do, I would take them and coach them just due to their other positive attributes."
