moonbow

Rare Double Moonbow Captured in Night Sky Above Iceland

hotographer Víðir Björnsson and a friend were driving in heavy wind and rain when they spotted the rare phenomenon.
"First I thought I was just seeing some reflection from the window of my car,” he told the BBC, “but then me and my friend who was driving decided to stop and try to get a picture of it."
Björnsson posted the images on social media where, according to Iceland Magazine, he pointed out a second, fainter moonbow in the photo just above the first. Though the second moonbow can just barely be made out in the photograph, Björnsson says it was much more visible to the naked eye.

hippos

Pair of Pablo Escobar's Hippos Invading Colombian Town Due to Drought

A pair of hungry hippopotamuses have invaded a nearby Columbian town in search of food, and experts say a major drought is to blame.
The hippos were once owned by notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. They were kept in Escobar's personal zoo at the Hacienda Napoles ranch, but several have escaped in recent years due to overpopulation, the Independent reported. Since his death in 1993, many of the exotic creatures, like giraffes, antelope and ostriches, have been moved from the ranch, but the hippos were allowed to stay, even after the compound became a theme park in 2008, the report added.
The BBC learned that the hippos have been at home in Colombia's tropical climate, where vegetation is normally lush and waterways are ideal for the creatures. In recent years, however, a severe drought has killed plants and thousands of animals, according to EcoWatch.

deep freeze

Midwest faces deep freeze in wake of snow storm

A deep freeze set in across the Midwest on Sunday with low temperatures forecast in the single digits and a few below zero, turning the season's first major snow into ice that made some roads treacherous to travel.
Temperatures plunged behind a cold front that brought snow across much of the region Friday and Saturday. The National Weather Service forecast 20 degrees or lower across six states from North Dakota to Illinois.

More than a dozen dead as wintry storm lingers over Southern Plains states

A deadly storm that has caused flooding and coated parts of the southern Plains in ice during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend dumped more rain on already swollen rivers in parts of North Texas and Arkansas on Sunday and made driving dangerous in parts of Oklahoma.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation said roads in the Panhandle remained slick after the slow-moving storm dropped ice and freezing rain in the region. Utilities in Oklahoma said the ice storms helped cut power to more than 71,000 as of Sunday afternoon.

Cold Blob

NASA: North Atlantic 'Cold Blob' May be Culprit Behind Ocean Current Slowdown

major player in the transportation of heat in the Atlantic Ocean is slowing down and may affect higher latitude climates in the Northern Hemisphere, according to a NASA analysis of satellite data.
The cold "blob" that developed off Greenland may be the drag on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) by producing very chilly to record cold water, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said earlier this year.

floods

Chennai, India, Endures Life-Threatening Flooding as Rainfall Totals are Expected to Top 380 mm

The threat for flooding will continue in southern India into Wednesday.
On the heels of a tropical low that produced flooding in parts of southern India last week, another powerful tropical has renewed flooding and caused widespread disruption across the region.
Due to interaction with India, development into a named tropical system is not expected, though regardless of development, heavy rain is expected to produce additional flooding in southeastern India, particularly areas within 85 km (50 miles) of the coast.

Severe Thunderstorms to Stretch Across Eight US States Early This Week

A powerful storm system will move across the central U.S. into Tuesday, bringing the risk for severe thunderstorms from the southern Plains to the lower Mississippi Valley.

Classic November Storm Brings Blizzard Conditions to the High Plains; Snow to the West

While snowfall amounts on the Plains were modest, strong winds gusting over 40 mph from an intensifying area of low pressure combined with the snow to produce low visibility and dangerous travel conditions. Roads were closed in parts of Colorado and Wyoming at times on Wednesday.

On Wednesday morning, snow totals over 8 inches were reported in the Denver metro area, with 8.1 inches in Northglenn and 8.3 inches in Centennial. The Denver International Airport officially measured 2.3 inches of snow with wind gusts topping 30 mph.

Forecasters say severe weather could affect 63 million people this week

Forecasters are warning 63 million people in the central U.S. to have an eye out for bad weather this week as colliding air masses threaten to generate high winds and possibly tornadoes.
The threat Wednesday stretches from San Antonio to Chicago to Cincinnati. It appeared Monday that Missouri, southern Illinois and northern Arkansas would face the greatest severe weather threat, but the Storm Prediction Center cautioned that people throughout the Midwest should be prepared to take action should the forecast change.

Strong winds

Damaging Winds to Sweep Chicago, Detroit and Buffalo

Following an outbreak of severe thunderstorms, high winds will sweep from the Plains to the Great Lakes and could also have damaging and disruptive consequences.
The same storm system responsible for heavy snow in the Rockies and severe weather expected on Wednesday will also generate a punch of 40- to 60-mph gusts over the Central states.
According to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski, the powerful gusts will hit some areas following severe thunderstorms and also many areas where severe thunderstorms will miss.

Floods

A plague of mosquitoes vexes South Carolina after historic floods

After rainfall and floods of almost biblical proportions, South Carolina is seeing a plague of mosquitoes. Now, lawmakers from both parties agree exterminating them must be a priority — even if it means spending actual money.
There's bipartisan support for killing the tiny bloodsuckers that have been tormenting residents following last month's historic rainfall that flooded several areas of the state. Lawmakers said Thursday they want the federal government to pay for the anti-mosquito campaign, but if it doesn't, the state should consider picking up the tab.

Fast-moving storm system dumps snow on Rockies, threatens tornadoes in Midwest

The system was expected to affect more than 36.5 million people from Colorado through Ohio and from Texas north through Michigan. The National Weather Service issued tornado watches for most of the day in parts of Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Iowa.
The storm left Denver covered in 5 inches of snow on Wednesday, and Colorado highway patrol troopers reported several crashes north of the city on windy, icy Interstate 25 near the Wyoming border. Wyoming authorities also shut down large sections of roadways.
