650x366_11141621_page-4.jpg

The risk for severe weather will dip unusually far south into the Middle East early this week.
Residents across northern Saudi Arabia, southwestern Iraq and eastern Jordan are being put on alert for potentially violent thunderstorms.
The danger will shift northwest to southeast across the risk zone from Monday into Tuesday. Tabuk and Medina, Saudi Arabia, and Najaf, Iraq, are among the cities at risk.

Severe Weather Threat in Lower Mississippi

map_specnewsdct-100_ltst_4namus_enus_485x273.jpg

A threat for severe thunderstorms continues as a potent storm system pushes east after leaving heavy snowfall over the mountains of the West. Wind and hail damage were reported in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, and the threat for strong storms will continue into Friday.

The chance of a few strong to isolated severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and perhaps a brief tornado will continue through Friday from the Lower Mississippi Valley into the Ohio Valley.

Obama Rejects Keystone XL Project

President Obama rejected a presidential permit Friday for the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, citing concerns about its impact on the climate.
"America’s now a global leader when it comes to taking serious action to fight climate change," Obama told reporters, standing in the Roosevelt Room beside Vice President Biden and Secretary of State John F. Kerry. "And frankly, approving this project would have undercut that global leadership. And that's the biggest risk we face, not acting."

El Nino to Get Bigger

elnino2-jpg.jpg

NEW ORLEANS —When we think of severe weather, we normally think of the spring months.
The truth is, we have a very active fall and even winter. Remember the EF3 tornado that hit McNeill, Mississippi, destroying homes on Christmas afternoon in 2012?

Severe Storms in Texas may Cause Tornadoes

CSkxQMuUEAQ72p6.jpg

Several reported tornadoes left damage in small towns near San Antonio, Texas, on Friday morning. In those areas, as well as near Austin, a flood emergency forced people to evacuate their homes.
The flash flood emergency was in effect for much of Comal County, as well as parts of Hays and Bexar counties, according to the National Weather Service. This includes areas like northern San Antonio and New Braunfels.

Severe Storms Cause Power Outages in New Orleans

Screen Shot 2015-10-25 at 10.18.21 PM.png

The heavy rains and storm gusts moving through the New Orleans area late Sunday (Oct. 25) are causing power outages throughout the region, and restoration crews are out working to restore service while contending with the severe weather conditions.

According to Entergy's Louisiana power outage map, more than 22,800 customers were without power as of 10:30 p.m. Sunday. The larger concentrations locally were in the 7th Ward, Lakeview, Meraux, Timberlane and near Estelle.

TennesseVally Experiances Effects of Hurrican

http://whnt.com/2015/10/26/jackson-county-ema-encourages-severe-weather-preparedness-amid-hurricane/

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WHNT)- We don't feel the full impact of hurricanes here in the Valley, though we get plenty of rain. Severe weather occurring nearby, is a good reminder to everyone the importance of being prepared.
Hurricanes are seen days before they hit. But for those of us in the Tennessee Valley, severe weather can pop up rapidly. This time of year Emergency Management Officials fear that people in the Tennessee Valley can become complacent when it comes to being prepared for severe weather.

Weather on Mars slightly Earth like?

The atmosphere on Mars is extremely thin. The atmosphere — what little there is of it — is about 95 percent carbon dioxide. The average atmospheric pressure on Mars is around 7.5 millibars, is compared to 1013 millibars on earth. When the Curiosity rover landed in the Gale Crater in August 2012, it was in the midst of Mars’ version of a high pressure system, with the barometer on the rover measuring 9 millibars.
Harmful radiation also bombards the planet. Because of these factors, Martian weather is vastly different from ours and no human can exist on it without a proper space suit or a tightly controlled environmental habitat.

Typhoon leaves 2 dead and 16,000 displaced

Slow-moving Typhoon Koppu weakened after blowing ashore with fierce winds in the northeastern Philippines on Sunday, leaving at least two people dead, displacing 16,000 villagers and knocking out power in entire provinces, officials said.
Army troops and police were deployed to rescue residents trapped in flooded villages in the hard-hit provinces of Aurora, where the typhoon made landfall early Sunday, and Nueva Ecija, a nearby rice-growing province where floodwaters swamped rice farmlands at harvest time.

September Snow Fall brings October Flooding

"The September storm that brought rain and snow to Southcentral Alaska is one for the record books.
Things got interesting on Tuesday, Sept. 29, when a strong storm system dropped 1.56 inches of rain in Anchorage. This beat the old daily record of 1.21 inches set in 1961.

Area flood advisories were issued for the Anchorage area and the Susitna Valley. Many streets and low-lying areas experienced standing water and flooding. In total, Anchorage recorded 7.7 inches of precipitation for September, which accounts for half of the total precipitation so far in 2015. This makes September 2015 the wettest on record for Anchorage."

Historic Rainstorm Ends Continues

"While the historic rainstorm will continue to pile up remarkable rainfall totals in South Carolina today, there will be just a little lingering light rain and drizzle for a while closer to home in Central North Carolina. So far, we've had 11 days in row of measurable precipitation. The last time that happened was back in the 80s!

There will be more of this light precipitation to the south of the Triangle than to the north. The cloud cover that will linger today will hold the temperatures in the 60s for yet another day. If we get any measurable rain today, we will tie a record for the most days in a row with precipitation. The last time this happened, none of us were around. It was in 1887!"

Hurricane Joaquin Creates Record Rains and Damaging Floods

"Heavy rains and chest-deep floodwaters inundated much of the Atlantic Seaboard yesterday, swamping coastal Georgia and parts of New Jersey and setting historic records in the Carolinas, which received the worst flooding.

By 2 a.m. today, Hurricane Joaquin, the force behind the destructive storm surge and rainfall, was about 100 miles northwest of Bermuda, moving at 13 mph. Its winds had slowed to 85 mph, down from speeds well above 100 mph."

El Nino Changed to Unulualy High Strength Status

Federal forecasters upgraded this year's El Nino to an unusual strong status, but said it's probably not a record breaker or drought buster.

Mike Halpert, deputy director of the federal Climate Prediction Center, said the current worldwide weather shifting event doesn't match the monster El Nino of 1997-1998, nor is it likely to.

As Jews across Israel celebrated the Jewish New Year of Rosh Hashana earlier this week, parts of the country were hit with extreme flash flooding and, in some areas, hail, in an unusual change of weather.

“It felt like the apocalypse, the rain has been torrential, there were about 10 lightning strikes in seconds, and even with your windshield wipers on high, it was impossible to see anything,” Mark Katz, a National Parks Authority employee, told the Times of Israel.

Climate Predictions for Fall and Winter Months

635781868559376581-noaa.JPG.jpg
BUFFALO, NY--   The Climate Prediction Center Thursday released its late fall / early winter forecast for the United States.  This forecast includes the months of October, November and December.
Graphics show Western New York is forecast to have a warmer, and drier than normal, period during these three months.  This seems to follow what can be typically expected during an El Nino event.
During strong El Nino events like this year, warm waters in the tropical Pacific ocean cause a strengthening of the Pacific jet stream which tends keep cold air bottled up in Canada and an active strorm track across the Southern US. Such a pattern is a warm one for Western New York during the winter and diminishes the lake effect snow process which keeps our seasonal snow totals down.

Tornado Warnings Expired but Storms are Still on Their Way

The tornado warning issued for Cook and Will counties has expired, although heavy rain and flooding are still expected throughout the Chicago area Friday night.

ABC7 Meteorologist Cheryl Scott says radar indicated rotation in a strong thunderstorm located south of Chicago near Monee, Ill. Although the tornado warning has expired, the storm - which is producing heavy rain and lightning - is heading east at 20 mph.

Unseasonably Warm Temperatures Across North America

18746883-mmmain.jpg

"High temperatures will reach the low- to mid-70s throughout most of the region on Sunday and then fall to the low- to mid-50s overnight, according to the National Weather Service. A slight chance of showers exists for most of the state throughout the day and wind gusts of up to 20 miles per hour are possible in the northeastern region.

The National Weather Service's Mount Holly office also said the high temperatures Wednesday through Saturday should be roughly 10 degrees above normal, "values more reminiscent of mid summer norms.""

180 Homes Destroyed in California

"At least 180 homes were destroyed by a wildfire in Northern California's Lake County that raced through dry brush and exploded in size within hours, officials said Sunday. The devastation comes after a separate wildfire to the southeast destroyed at least 81 homes.
Mark Ghilarducci, California's emergency chief, says this summer's fires are the most volatile he has seen in 30 years of emergency response work. He says the main cause behind the fast-spreading fires is dry conditions from the four-year drought."
