California Lightning Strikes

With the aftermath of Irma and Harvey still fresh in our minds, unusual weather has become one of the main topics in the news.  But can things get any weirder?  That's what California residents thought after more than 800 lightning strikes were recorded on Monday, the 11th.  The Daily Mail reports that there were winds of 35 and 50 mph.  These strange occurrences happened between 12 pm and 5 pm, and were all separate instances in the Northern California area.

This event was so strange because the lightning continued for hours before the rain and thunder started to come in.  Many residents were very confused by the weather events and expressed their confusion over social media.  One user states, "So I'm in San Jose, it was 90 degrees at 4, by 5 its 70 out yet it's rain thunder and lightning".  It got so bad that, at one point, the Palo Alto Fire Department warned citizens to stay indoors.

While this lightning storm was very unexpected, professionals say that the likelihood of it returning Tuesday is only at a 20 to 30 percent chance.  Still, residents are told to take shelter, and remain in a secure building in case the lightning decides to strike again.
