La Niña May Develop By Fall or Winter, NOAA Says; Here's What That Could Mean

La Niña is in the possible forecast for these next couple of months, according to a released report by NOAA. This will likely impact weather in the United States this upcoming fall and winter.
While El Niño is the periodic warming phase of the equatorial eastern and central Pacific Ocean, La Niña is the snowmiser sister to this phenomenon. In light of this atmospheric response, we should expect colder temperatures within the Northern Plains, Upper Midwest, New England, New York state, and the West Coast. Though, warmer temperatures are thought to happen in the Southern Plains and Southeast parts of the country.
NOAA's diagnostic states that there is a 55-60% chance of La Niña coming to fruition, lasting until spring 2018.
Nevertheless, it is always a good idea to be prepared for the chilly season no matter what. Stock up on mittens!
