Hurricane Maria Rapidly Intensifies to Cat 4

Hurricane Maria is beginning to lash the Leeward Islands after rapidly intensifying.
Heavy rain and at least tropical-storm-force winds are possible in the Irma-affected northern Leeward Islands.
Maria will likely strike the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as an intense hurricane Wednesday.
After at least a brush with Hispañola, Maria may then target the Turks and Caicos by Friday.
It remains too early to determine if Maria will ever threaten the U.S. East Coast next week.

Hurricane Maria is beginning to pound the Leeward Islands as an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane and will follow that up with a potentially devastating hit on the already storm-weary Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, parts of which are still recovering from Hurricane Irma less than two weeks ago.
