Hurricane Sandy rips New York a new one.

Hurricane Sandy, also called Superstorm Sandy, swept through 8 countries during the fall of 2012. It is said that Sandy is the second costliest hurricane of all time, or at least Sandy was up until Harvey hit. Sandy’s death count as of November 1st is 149 people, mostly from New York and the Caribbean.

Sandy started as a tropical wave in the Caribbean and quickly grew into a hurricane, topping the charts with winds up to 175 miles per hour. Sandy’s most notable damage was in New York City, where the subway systems flooded and millions went without electricity due to the flooding. The level of water in Battery Park topped out at 13.8 feet, breaking the previous record set by Hurricane Donna in 1960. It is said that the skyscrapers were waving in the strong winds that accompanied the water, threatening to fall at any moment. In total, the cost of damage came to about $75 billion.
