Joplin Tornado, 2011

The deadliest tornado in the United States since 1947 hit Joplin, MO in May of 2011. This tornado had winds that got up to 200 miles per hour and killed 158 people. Although it lasted only 38 minutes, it was the highest costing tornado of all time in the U.S., at $2.8 billion of damage. Manhole covers were torn off, vehicles were picked up and wrapped around trees, thousands of homes and businesses were levelled.

One interesting story from the tornado was of the travelling Picadilly circus that was in town. Due to the storm, they were unable to perform but instead brought their two adult elephants to help move destroyed cars and debris out of the way so the first responders could get through.
