Extreme cold weather turns hot water into ice in China

On December 6, 2018, bitter temperatures of -43.5 degrees C (43.5 below) caused rare ice fog to from in the Chinese city of Mohe, in the northern part of China caused by a cold front that approached the northern part of the city causing temps to drop between 12 and 20 degrees Celsius on Monday, Dec. 3, 2018. Authorities announced that temps fell minus 41.1 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, the week of December 3, 2018, minus 42.1 on Wednesday, and minus 43.5 degrees Celsius on that Thursday.

The city was forced to issue their first-ever red warning for cold weather due to the extreme cold front.

Ice fog was formed as water droplets suspended in the air causing a reduction in visibility of fewer than 100 meters, and forms under certain conditions such as when high humidity is combined with temps no higher than -30 degrees Celsius, which allows crystals to form in the air.
