Winter Storm Diego Crippled the Southeast with Heavy Snow and Damaging Ice (RECAP)

Diego's top snow total was 34 inches at Mount Mitchell in western North Carolina. Whitetop in far southwestern Virginia had the second-most snow with 24 inches. Officially, 11.5 inches of snow was measured in Richmond, Virginia, Dec. 9. That's the city's second-highest calendar-day snowfall for the month of December. Roanoke, Virginia, reported a snow total of 15 inches Dec. 9 – the city's heaviest calendar-day snowfall for the month of December – with 2 inches of that falling in an hour. Cars were seen off the road on Interstate 81 near Roanoke that afternoon.
